Malawian Grown Solutions to Malawian Problems

Malawian grown solutions to Malawian problems

MML was founded to show how commercial companies can help break the aid cycle in one of the poorest countries on the world.  Rather than treat the symptoms of developmental issues MML addresses the causes and by doing so offers the smallholders that it partners with a realistic and sustainable route out of poverty.  MML does not wish to impose solutions on to the smallholders that it partners with, rather MML helps develop 'Malawian grown solutions to Malawian problems'.  MML's approach seeks to complement the work of other organisations in order to amplify impact.  Whilst not a panacea, MML's smallholder programme has the potetnial to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of rural Malawians.

UN Sustainable Development Goals - Social Impact

MML's operations offer holistic solutions to development issues and by doing so MML directly or indriectly impacts 12 social impact SDGs.  Impact is amplified by ensuring that smallholders play an integral part in the delivery of impact, thus providing a sense of ownership to the solutions.  A detailed breakdown of MML's social impact can be found here.

Environmental Impact

MML takes its reposnsibility to the envrionment extremely seriously.  We set and maintain the highest environmental standards and take the time to train our smallholders how best to positively impact their environments.  Key to MML's approach is that:

  • MML is a carbon positive and waste zero company - all of the by-porducts generated through moringa production have secondary uses
    • biomass becomes animal feed;
    • crushed seed becomes a natural water purifier and;
    • excess product can be converted to orgainc moringa fertiliser.
  •  MML's operations are organic.

The Future - Carbon credits and MML's company foundation

MML has exciting plans to use the sale of carbon credits to provide a means to further enhance smallholder incomes and to enable MML to establish a company foundation.  Carbon credits will be generated by expanding our smallholder network and growing additional moringa for the purposes of carbon sequestration.

MML's aim is to plant an additional 3 million trees through this programme, allowing the sequestration of over 350,000 tonnes of carbon per annum. Revenue will be split between increasing smallholder incomes, taxation and enabling MML's

MML's foundation will focus on village specific interventions - providing lasting solutions to smallholder prioritised issues.
